Thanks for the detailed explanation Badfish. My own research online seems to suggest that there are other additional drilling techniques that allow to make a relatively sharp turn followed by horizontal drilling. Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be a good site out there that explains all the various options to laymen and what the trade-offs are.
But having some superficial understanding of the process is always good to help assess potential risks.
