Tax: selling higher cost lots, crystallise the loss, then buy back, perhaps not same day, but within a few days, to reestablish the position. Risk is being short their desired position if/when they announce progress with IBM, and the stock gaps up, though if they are crystallising a loss large enough to cover the gap risk.....not sure the ATO views it favourably though if done within a short period and its not part of an investment strategy like market making.
