Sorry I can't agree that "Trump is probably one of the best conmen ever". He simply isn't that clever. Much of the con has been performed by interested parties with things to gain.
Trump is but a performing monkey that they roll out (quite literally) to perform his gross and repugnant performances. Its like being in the middle ages with public executions. The illiterate and uneducated loved it. Trumps vile rants appeal to the same sort of people. He lies openly. Makes it clear that there are no rules that can't be broken to take what you want from others. It gives low life's hope that they too can do the same if he gets into power.
Don't give Trump credit for being smart. He is a very stupid man. Even his mum said so.
