Only some of the coal and iron ore producers are on fixed contracts. Many base metals and other commodity producers sell straight into the spot market, hence the volatility in their share prices last year and overall improvements since March last year.
A strong AUD also means there's an inferred preference for putting overseas money in Australia. This can roughly translate to overseas investment in Australian commodities and financial institutions.
