You can just imagine him thinking. What a sucker , if he had had half a brain he would have faked an illness , and stayed well out of harms way. But the cult followers will lap it up. They are not important any more , but pandering to them is all he has left. Regular humans will recognize the hypocrisy, and be reminded what a 2 faced tool he is. They are the ones who will send him into political oblivion.
