14 Jan, 2010 12:30 AM THE Atlantic bluefin tuna has been rated sixth on a list of species most at threat of extinction, but no mention was made of the southern bluefin tuna (SBT), which is farmed off the Port Lincoln coast.
The World Wide Fund (WWF) produced the list, which showed the tiger as the species most at threat of being wiped out in the entire world. The Atlantic bluefin is a migratory fish found in the western and eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean seas.
Last year when commenting on a potential worldwide ban of Atlantic bluefin, Australian SBT Association chief executive Brian Jeffriess said there was no doubt a ban would increase demand for SBT with higher prices.
Late last year, an Australian conservation group nominated SBT as a threatened species under Australian law.
In October last year, Australia's SBT catch quota was reduced from 5265 tonnes to 4015 tonnes over the next two years in an effort to boost stock numbers.
