tpcs, the Japanese market is full of enigmatic practices, but it works.
Not only do Japanese buyers like Mitsubishi conduct exhaustive trials on products they buy, they continue to do such trials over the life of the contract to maintain quality assurance. So expect more news on this aspect throughout the course of the agreement.
In addition, companies like Mitsubishi, Mitsui, Tohatsu etc, normally send a large amount of test material to consumer manufacturers so that they can generate products and do their own trials on the quality. This is so that they as buyers know what they are getting from large companies like Mitsubishi et al. Moreover, these test products are also subjected to tests on a number of scales, and the results are shared back to larger companies. Time consuming...rigorous and procedurally a paperwork nightmare, but it gets done time and time again.
Japanese sellers do not like to 'lose face' by selling untested and unproven goods, so hence the tests are done to the satisfaction of all parties, and again, all parties sign off on that aspect.
My guess is that CNQ have sent a range from the tailings and hard rock samples and as such these will have been tested in line with the following tests as well as in manufactured state:
