just for information purposes, this is a depiction of a polysilicon ingot being sliced into "wafers" for a PV cell
The most common material for the cutting wire itself is made of diamond/high carbon steel
As you can imagine, these ultra thin wafers would require many cuts in a single ingot - due to the extra strength of a tungsten wire, the wire can be thinner which results in less WASTE of the poly material itself.
With the significant price rises in the poly material itself (63/- yuan to 276/- yuan - 4 fold increase) its no wonder they are looking at a tungsten cutting wire solution to keep the costs down
And with the projected number of solar panels to be manufactured and installed to achieve net zero, this has a huge potential for increased tungsten demand
