If you listen to radio you hear stuff about Turkey. ABC's News Now station runs BBC world service stuff every now and then that includes stories from Turkey. They have a long way to go to conform with European standards. They want to join the EEC, for the free money, like the rest of the joiners.
I can recommend it as an historical holiday destination.
