Let me break it down the way I see it.

ISIS - Enemy No 1

America - No Conviction to defeat ISIS

Russia - Smashing ISIS scum.

Unfortunately, the West has dropped the ball, and Putin picked it up. Is he squeaky clean? Hell no, but neither is the west.

America supports terrorists in Syria, Putin is killing them.

For most, this is a no brainer.

I'll happily switch side when I see a Western leader with a spine.

BTW, who's the murderous thug? Do you mean the guy that has armed ISIS over the last few years? The I'd agree.
