There are several items that Turnbull will push for that are probably easier achieved by a "conservative" PM than a Labor PM. A republic, gay marriage and a carbon price being the main three currently. I think Turnbull would take a "crash through or crash" approach on those issues in the knowledge that he'd have a maximum of two election wins in him. He'd hold much of the centre and small percentage of the left at his first election after taking over. The incumbent seems to have abandoned the centre altogether, and become increasingly erratic and belligerent in his approach since his near death experience.
