Alex Turnbull continues to wage war on the Coalition
The son of former Liberal leader Malcolm Turnbull, Alex Turnbull, appears to have donated to both Zali Steggall and Kerryn Phelps’s campaigns as he continues to wage war on the Morrison government after his father was deposed from the prime ministership.
Alex Turnbull, an investor in renewable energy, is in regular contact with several independent candidates, including Dr Phelps, who confirmed yesterday they had discussed issues “such as climate change”.
When contacted by The Australian, Mr Turnbull said the newspaper could find out from the Australian Electoral Commission about donations in good time. “You can read the donations when the AEC disclosures are out,” he said.
Ms Steggall and Ms Phelps’s camps yesterday would not deny they had received donations from Mr Turnbull. Previously it has been reported only that he had donated to a Tasmanian Senate candidate who is a friend, Anthoney Pesec, and facilitated a donation from another donor to Liberal-turned-independent Julia Banks.
Asked yesterday whether Mr Turnbull had donated to Ms Steggall’s campaign bid to oust former prime minister Tony Abbott from the seat of Warringah, Ms Steggall’s spokesman said: “We will be providing donation details in compliance with AEC regulations.”
