I don't see how spending on new schools, hospitals, roads (not tolled) and so on would make money for the economy at this time when everything is slowing. The "building" you are probably referring to would have most likely meant deficits and would be a further drain on the gov treasury in these difficult times.
The fed gov have entered this crisis with money in the bank. Surely you are not suggesting that the previous lot should have left a black hole plus ongoing costs for Rudd to try and fill with dramatically falling revenues?
Oh and to support your claim are there any countries better placed than Australia because they did a lot of "building"? I note Dubai isn't exactly rolling along as they were!
Rudd even admits that we are in one of the best positions in the world. Perhaps comments like "now we have nothing to sustain the economy" are a little unfair? Well I think so!
