The man is a Buffoon.
It was seven years ago last Thursday that Malcolm Turnbull lost the leadership of the Liberal Party because of his eagerness to put a price on carbon.
It might defy belief but he is now flirting with the same issue.
The political penalty for him could conceivably be the same; by dabbling with pricing carbon in the energy sector he has already dropped a jemmy bar into the largest fissure in Coalition ranks.
But more importantly it provides a confusing signal to business and the electorate over the direction of energy policy.
Since the election there has been a refreshing pragmatism about the Turnbull government’s energy policy. Spurred on by price hikes and blackouts in South Australia that were seriously exacerbated if not triggered by that state’s headlong rush to a 40 per cent renewable energy share, Turnbull and his Environment and Energy Minister, Josh Frydenberg, have been telling us that the two highest priorities are secure supplies of electricity and affordable pricing.
Climate concerns had rightly been relegated to a third-order priority.
