I once read some time ago(no I can't produce it), that a Uni study put forward a theory that through the study of fossilized Emu eggs (I think or some other species) that due to tens of thousands of years of slash & burn land clearing by Aboriginals along with the rainless thunderstorms that start bush fires, that this made the rains retreat from the center of the continent never to return.
