Jeeps, now I know how my grandfather felt when they were fighting in Potsdamer. I am guessing he lost his sense of humour then as well. My grandfather was under Gen. Wenck but later Weidling as the 12th was finished and those with heart wanted to fight the Russians and not the Americans and so basically deserted. By coincidence, I attended university with Wenck's grandson (or so he said - same spelling). Of course, we didn't pronounce his last name correctly.....
