South Africa-based Continental Coal has reported a total run-of-mine coal production of 152,280t for the fourth quarter of 2012 fiscal, ended 31 December.
The figures represent a 40% increase in production, when compared to 109,935t produced in the earlier quarter.
During the reporting period, the company secured an approval from the Department of Mineral Resources to extend the opencast mining operations into adjacent and adjoining prospecting rights.
With progress in opencast mining operations, the run-of-mine coal production increased from 38,700 tonnes in October 2012 to 57,550t in December 2012.
Continental CEO Don Turvey remarked that company had exported over 1 million tons of high quality thermal coal from the Ferreira Coal Mine since operations began in November 2010.
"Our increasing production levels at the Ferreira Coal Mine and commencement of production at our newly developed Penumbra Coal Mine has been timely with record coal railings and investment by South Africa's rail operator Transnet into the dedicated Richards Bay Coal Line and coal exports at the Richards Bay Coal Terminal at its highest levels since 2006," said Turvey.
The company expects to produce a total of 600,000t, high quality thermal coal from the Ferreira Coal Mine for the 2013 financial year.
