Brisbane, Australia – March 11, 2009: Households will be able to use an Australian microdot technology to protect valuables under a world-first initiative of the Brisbane City Council.
The Council today announced a new service that will see it subsidise residents who wish to use the technology.
The microdot technology is being provided by DataDot Technology (ASX: DDT) and is already used to protect nearly one million vehicles on Australia’s roads. This is the first time it has been made available on mass to household consumers.
Under the program, announced by Brisbane Lord Mayor, Cr Campbell Newman, home kits will be available for purchase, at a subsidised rate, from Council libraries and PCYC centres within the Brisbane municipality.
The acting Chief Executive of DataDot, Mr Ben Bootle, said: “We’re very excited to be part of the Lord Mayor’s initiative on home security in Brisbane. What we’re launching is a product which, in these uncertain times, allows you to protect your home assets … it’s like putting thousands of micro-labels on your property.”
Residents that purchase a kit will spray valuables with microdots from a can that contains the uniquely encoded dots.
The property owner then registers his or her assets in a database that is accessed via the Internet. Residents are encouraged to use decals provided as part of a do-it-yourself kit to label the goods as ‘DataDot Protected – Identifiable by Police’.
In the event goods are stolen, it is almost impossible for thieves to remove the dots.
Mr Bootle said that if police recover DataDot protected stolen goods, they are able to identify to whom the stolen assets belong by reading the code on any dot using a special handheld ‘wand’. This is matched to the property’s rightful owner via the database.
“Not only does this mean stolen property can be returned to its rightful owner but police are far more likely to secure a conviction because the property’s owner can be identified,” Mr Bootle said. “This has proven to be a highly effective theft deterrent.”
