Mr Forrest is critical of media stories detailing the attempts of Chinese companies in Australia, including property developers, to buy up PPE and send it to China when Wuhan was experiencing the worst of the virus outbreak in January and February.

At the time, he said, Minderoo was also sending tens of thousands of masks to help China, while FMG provided $1 million to help build a temporary hospital there.

"We are now getting back millions of masks and other material in response, a multiple of what we were able to send," he said from his home in Perth.

The Chinese embassy in Australia has defended the actions of Chinese companies and directly compared it with Mr Forrest’s efforts – which Mr Forrest also complains did not receive the same critical media coverage.“I'm proud of what we did and thank God China remembers, even if the Australian media forget,” he argued.
