"free carried" generally means that the person bought a whole lot of stock (often when it was cheap, as a speculator), and when the SP rose substantially, sold off a chunk of his/her original holding to cover the original outlay - meaning the remaining shares were "free". Technically not correct, but generally means that people can feel like it doesn't matter what happens to the SP after that as 'my shares were free'. However, like all of us, they do care - but it's an interesting psychological perspective
