Have to admit, Siera, that I didn't realize it was so prevalent on a world-wide basis. Nevertheless, FGM is haram according to the majority of Islamic scholars. It does not happen in the most hardline Islamic countries like Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan or Pakistan, From what I've just read it seems to have morphed into some kind of perverted social culture practiced by some Muslims and Christians alike. Ignorant, uneducated peasants are capable of anything I guess.
