    Given history of Lihir sinking $750m (or $1b by some reports) into developing this mine, the words "profitable modern mining operation" are the ones that sting because they conjure up men with torches and hand picks trying to hack nuggets out of quartz spurs as the fall bac to the current plan. Ouch.
