I doubt if there will be any major increase in the efficiency of ICEs from now on. Collectively many billons has been spent on them over the last 100 years so all the easy gains have been made. Combine that with R&D budgets favoring EVs over ICEs and it is hard to see too many positives for ICEs in the future.
