Interesting that on this thread some people perceive Latham as an opportunist....I do not see this in Latham more than in any other politician.
Remember when John Howard took office in 1996? Shortly after this the Martin Bryant massacre at Port Arthur occurred. And what did Howard do immediately after the killings, while the anguish was still being felt across the country? He banned nearly all, or most of the guns held in Australia. This policy wasn't even close to being on the Liberal agenda when they took power.
This was one of the most politically opportunistic stunts I have ever seen - whether the policy was right or not - Howard read the short term feeling of the majority and he exploited it. Over time he developed such a mastery for this - credit where credit is due - now he doesn't even bother trying to look honest...
Latham is nothing in opportunism compared to this worm.
