    When you walk up to a cafe and use the banks Atm machine (a card payment system) do you pay? Yes."


    I don't think those are the correct analogies because you do pay a fee, if not explicitly, then implicitly by dint of you given the bank that operates the terminal, your money, which it lends out to others for a profit.

    But the situation that applies to coffee shops and their customers is totally different because the terminal provider is a third party, such as Tyro (and the reason Tyro has come into existence is because it is uncommercial for the banks to continue to provide terminals to merchants, so they have been exiting that activity).

    The question that needs to be asked in this matter is, "If there was to be no cost for the use of a terminal, as you posit, how many terminal providers would continue to provide terminals?"
