Brian - IP protection can come in other than legal forms - you don't need a patent if you can keep things secret (Coca Cola syrup but bottling around the world has been done via distributors),build a brand name(Nike - there's no secret to making shoes), secure a supply chain etc.
Manufacture in your own factory secures a secret better than totally contracting out. Tee Zee will probably partially contract out the manufacture or partially contract out assembly and ensure they keep the most sensitive processes in their control.
