Taiwan to sign contract soon to dispose of uranium: official,..2018/11/22 15:15:00

Taipei, Nov. 22 (CNA) Taiwan will sign a NT$300 million (US$9.7 million) contract next week to dispose of its uranium reserves, Lin Kin-fu (林金福), director-general of the Institute of Nuclear Energy Research (INER), said Thursday.The company that will obtain the contract has not been named but was referred to as a foreign contractor by Lin during a legislative review of the budget for the Atomic Energy Council (AEC) under which the INER falls.The AEC will sign the contract with the foreign company next week, agreeing to pay a total of NT$300 million to dispose of Taiwan's unused uranium hexafluoride (UF6), Lin said.He said it would be more costly to dispose of the radioactive compound domestically because of Taiwan's disposal techniques and the time that would be required. Taiwan imported 35 metric tons of UF6 from the United States and France in the 1980s to develop its nuclear energy. However, Taiwan's plans for uranium enrichment to eventually build more nuclear reactors came later to a standstill after it changed its nuclear policy.
