Russian Nuclear Contracts Could Be Affected by Western Sanctions
Nuclear industry contracts between Russia and other nations could be affected by Western sanctions, according to Sergey Kiriyenko, CEO of Russian state nuclear entity Rosatom. In addition to recent travel/visa bans and asset freezes affecting certain Russian officials, due to Russia’s annexation of Crimea, the USA and European Union have threatened to enact measures that could affect more economic sectors, including the nuclear industry, which would depend on the actions of the Russian government. “Considering an array of comments about possible restrictions on economic cooperation, we understand that some of our [international] contracts could fall under political curbs,” Kiriyenko told Russian news agency RIA Novosti this week. He added, however, that no contracts had been affected to date and all agreements, including those for fuel supplies to Ukrainian nuclear power facilities, have remained on schedule. Other contracts that could be affected by potential sanctions include Rosatom’s contracts to build nuclear power plants abroad, as well as uranium fuel contracts for Russian-built plants. [top]
