There is the vertical depth to the top of the reservoir and the measured depth to the top of the reservoir .
The well direction changes from vertical to near horizontal prior to entering the reservoir so there is a significant difference at that point in the vertical depth and measured depth of the well .
Once they start drilling the horizontal section the measured depth increases but the vertical depth remains more or less constant .
