    Had to laugh re: XM & NY's story of ppl paying Uber $340 for a $35 taxi fare and $140 for an $18 fare. The surge sting is a bit of a joke. Most worryingly, no matter how much you ask about the fair, Uber have the right to change it right up to the nanosecond you start your journey. More importantly, as Uber is legalised, their cost structure will go up and they will cease to have any price advantage over a std taxi. Compliance costs will be passed on to the customer.

    Don't get me wrong: I believe Uber was a good initiative. It only works, however, because its unregulated. The dross in here about "bad taxi drivers" is a red herring. I suspect the per capita assault rate by Uber drivers is just as high or higher than that of cabbies - the raw numbers conveniently hides this.
