It seems to me that the question of economic viability of the mine would also be on the minds of the workers some of whom have lost family members in the explosion.
For the local community the mine is an important source of employment.....
The more I listen to the experts the more I realise that there is a high inherant danger of explosion and collapse in underground coal mining. This is a danger that all employees are well aware of on a daily basis and which mine management take extrordinary steps to try to mitigate.
Both Australia and New Zealand have had their fair share of mine disasters with the inevitable loss of life. The safe mining practices of both countries, however, must be recognised when compared to India and China where it has been estimated that close to 3,000 miners lose their lives each year.
I do not believe your questions were misplaced. What has happened is a tradegy for sure....What will happen will affect the remaining community. Time to face reality and give the families who have lost loved ones a solid plan for their own future.
As PSI says to use UGC technology on the Pike River coals would be a waste of some of the worlds highest quality coking coal.
Cougar has targeted low grade coals and those uneconomic to mine which is the real beauty of UCG tech.
