In Hungary, and most of Eastern Europe, most of their gas is sourced from Russia at a high cost.
Why would you want to rely on a foreign country for such a necessity, when you can produce it in your own country, for a cheaper cost? There are political reasons for this as well... In the even of a war or whatever, the Russians could cut off the gas supply (I have heard this has happened before in the past), and you'd be left to fend for yourself in a European winter. Gas is heavily used in European countries, much more so than it is in Australia (heating, cooking etc.).
I can see why the Hungarian Government would want this.
