Langan mentions the 'danger zone', which is an IQ around 140. A kind of Dunning-Kruger zone for fairly clever people (but well short of genius IQ). DeGrasse Tyson and Dawkins could fit into that zone. Smart enough to question traditional representations of religion, but not smart enough to truly understand it. He points out that almost all of the geniuses throughout history have believed in God.
The phrase "believe in God" requires a lot of unpacking, obviously. It's not a useful phrase, but some sort of words are required. People read it and think the words "believe" and "God" are straightforward when they're anythng but. 10 different people might say they believe in God and yet be referring to vastly different intellectual and experiential understandings.
