I'd disagree on this point. I think the phenomenon is intimately connected with spirituality. I'm not th eonly one. The most respected researcher in the field (Jacques Vallee) is strong on this point. First hand accounts very commonly involve spiritual phenomena occuring either during or after the sighting.

An argument against this would be those instances where people see UFOs are they're not in an altered state of consciouness. I'd put it to you that in those instances, they're not observing UFOs but instead, secret US technology.
