Okay, I don't know you're take on religion in general, but let's give it a go anyway.

Jesus is no more special than any other Teacher, Prophet, Manifestation of God. He is one of many Teachers, such as Krishna, Zoroaster, Buddha, Moses, etc, and you're right, humans can not progress spiritually on their own, so from age to age a Jesus like figure emerges. The return of Jesus is not literally Jesus, it is a being with those same qualities and because all these Teachers serve the Will of God they do not differentiate between each other, nor is one greater than the other. They relate and are relative to a time, a place, a need and the capacity of the audience.

Jesus return will be or was a being with the same qualities as Jesus. I say was because there are no Biblical prophecies that place the return of Jesus beyond 1844.
