We have to face down this very dangerous nationalism that has now pitted the Chinese against the Americans and the allies of each who have somewhat been forced to polarise and take sides. Russia is a nuclear catastrophe waiting to happen and the country is held in the grip of a dangerous, unbalanced anachronism of a leader. Then we have North Korea and Iran emerging as nuclear powers.
If we survive this we still have an environmental catastrophe that is now starting to reveal itself. Add to that this disparity of wealth crisis, food and water shortages. The present political environment is all but impotent to react in any meaningful way and religion, that should be at the forefront of the changes needed, can only offer platitudes gleaned from a cornflakes box.
Most of the dire problems identified as a threat to human society are worse today than they were 10 years ago, despite the countless international forums, junkets, speeches, promises and scientific consensus.
I do think some sentient beings made it through. Part of my family were banana farmers in northern NSW. My older cousin who was very religious, did not swear or drink and did not believe in aliens and was as honest as the day is long, was standing at the highest point on his farm with his brothers working lower down and a classic flying saucer, making no sound, passed by him in bright sunlight. It was perhaps 60 meters away from him and a completely uninterrupted view for several minutes. It made its way below the tops of the hills, following a curving valley.
He called his family up but they just missed it. The effect on him was very profound on many levels. His reluctant retelling and the effect on him of retelling and knowing the man is good enough for me.

I think that you would find that most races in the Universe go through there evolution similar to ours with the same problems, the races that survive are the races that are not fooled by these greenies who put on a halt to industrialization with there lies and bad science, that causes problems due to rising costs that results in wars and people going cold and or hungry.
It is my view that the races that made it, are the races that used up there oil and gas to get themselves to a point that they could travel across the stars.
