I don't proclaim to know the detail either, but I'd offer the following as contributors. The UK is:-

(a) The traditional, primary country for Arab oil money to invest in the rest of the world; and
(b) The main conduit between the English-speaking world and Europe (it's strangely "inside", yet "outside" the EU system); and
(c) UK citizens are still in the top 5 foreign landowners in almost every foreign country which was ever a part of the British Empire. [Wealth built under the "old style" of empire-building - rape, pillage, plunder and take over - lasts a long time.]

You should also remember that hearing about the UK pound in terms of $US is an illusion for us, because the pound has declined vs $AU and the Euro over the past few years, whilst virtually everything except the Zimbabwean dollar has appreciated against the $US.
