Offering the alternative of a year of weekend voluntary work has cheapened the national service idea. Britain, as do all European countries, needs ro recognise the inevitability of war, with Russia intent on retaking Eastern Europe. Putin promised in 1989 he would do his best to see that happen. He now has the power and the alliances to make it happen.
