Getting near the end of Babylon Berlin, which I suspect draws heavily on Christopher Isherwood's book Goodbye to Berlin, though I've never read it.
It's very good - the tv series that is - portraying probably fairly accurately that short interregnum between the authoritarianism of the Kaiser's Germany and Hitler's draconian & inhuman regime which followed.
It was a period of grinding poverty and conspicuous wealth at the extremes and in the middle that short interlude where anything was possible.
