One American series I DO like just now (because it isn't the usual garbage) is Under the Banner of Heaven.
It is set in Salt Lake City in Utah, founded in the mid-19th century by.Mormon pioneers led by Brigham Young. I'd say the period of this drama is about the 1970s.
A section of the LDS community, Latter Day Saints as they describe themselves, is not happy with the way their government(s) is taxing them in all kinds of ways and is more or less in revolt. Neither are they happy with niggling signs that their womenfolk may no longer be happy as brood mares.
