Nights of Cabiria (1954)
The incomparable Giulietta Masina in a role which in a way reprises her part as Gelsemina with Anthony Quinn in La Strada.
Again she is the tragi-comic figure which you can't help falling for. And again she has a similar background of post war Italy with its awful poverty contrasted with glimpses of the more affluent.society beginning to appear.
Born in 1921, she is of the generation who would have seen lots of Chaplin in the cinemas I suspect and the influence I think is unmistakable.
Her husband, Federico Fellini, introduces us here to many of the regular fascinations he would use later in La Dolce Vita.and 8 1/2.
I'd not seen this classic before and I'm so pleased I've finally caught up with it. It's just brilliant cinema.
Both this & La Strada won Oscars as best foreign films of their year.
