I remember singing the Lorelei (I was a pretty good boy soprano and our choir sang on the ABC a couple of times) and a good translation, but I had completely forgotten about all of that, the German, the Lorelei and all that till you mentioned it.
Latin & French I did too for about 3 years but I stuck with German I think because I found the structure so ordered. When theui internet started in the 1980s I developed penpal relations with a few people in Germany but they fell away over time. I wish now I had stuck with French because I later read a lot of French literature - Balzac, Georges Sand and others and it would have been good to read it in French. And of course I have enjoyed French cinema going as far back as things like Rififi.
    Cheers
