    Fortunes of War (1987)

Another great adaptation by Alan Plater, I'm watching this 1987 series again because it's so good and I want to drain the bottle so to speak.
It's set during the prelude to Hitler's war and the location shifts from Romania to Greece to Egypt as a group of British ex-pats find themselves having to move on to escape the war.
The lead actors, Kenneth Branagh (Wallander) and Emma Thompson (Love Actually) are always good value but there are some great supporting actors as well, like Ronald Pickup as an alleged refugee prince.
There is also a play within the play, like Hamlet, where the ex pats and some others put on a performance of Troilus & Cressida (being about the tragedies of the Ancient Greek wars) for the Bucharest audience.

It's a long series, nearly 7 hours, and having such a good storyline and cast, it's really worth looking for.
