I was going to watch Alfie again last night. I just love it but my wife is appalled by his outlook. Well thems the breaks. But instead I found on SBS another Michael Caine movie, The Quiet American, another of his good movies. It's based of course on Grahame Green's 1955 book of the same name. Greene was one of a golden age of writers like Evelyn Waugh & others. Greene however was an habitual traveller/observer of then emerging countries, including Vietnam, one country as it was then and is again now. So he observed the change that was coming at first hand and he saw the threat of American involvement coming, which destroyed so many lives for no purpose.
