On a second viewing I'm giving this a classic rating.
Directed by that great actor Alan Rickman, taken from us too soon, this movie gives us much the same story in the relationships between four groups of two people of different age groups and thus gives us an eternal message....that we need each other.
The starring roles are the first group, Emma Thompson, who has lost her husband, and her mother, whom she finally realised needs her because of age.
The youngest group are two schoolboy friends - and without a doubt these two are the best child actors I have ever seen, and their roles are not easy, so it's worth seeing just for them.
The oldest coupling are two elderly ladies whose friendship finally ends in the realization of one that the other will be needing more of her help in future.
And the final coupling is a more standard one between Emma's teenage son and a girl whom he meets up with and makes love with, more a standard relationship though the girl shows signs of needing support from him I thought.

As I said, this movie has entered my pantheon of magnificent cinema experiences and I hope I live to enjoy it a couple more times anyway. And I hope any readers of this might seek it out.

BTW, the chemistry is real, it's Emma's real life mum.

The best child acting I've seen was from "Captains Courageous" (1937). Spencer Tracy won an Oscar for his lead role. Some Trivia from imdb,
"When production finally wrapped in late February 1937, Spencer Tracy was relieved. "Well, I got away with it," he said later. "Want to know why? Because of Freddie, because of that kid's performance, because he sold it 98 per cent. The kid had to believe in Manuel, or Manuel wasn't worth a quarter. The way he would look at me, believe every word I said, made me believe in it myself. I've never said this before, and I'll never say it again. Freddie Bartholomew's acting is so fine and so simple and so true that it's way over people's heads. It'll only be by thinking back two or three years from now that they'll realize how great it was."
