Frakking has been used in oil and gas extraction for over 60 years. The process and techniques are well known and environmentally benign.
The well publicised cases referred to by Meerkat are rare examples of sloppy work and sloppy regulation and involve poor well construction that has caused the problems. Not the hydraulic fracturing.
For a couple of recent pieces of investigative journalism that look for a more balanced view, I'd recommend these from the BBC and ABC - neither known for favouring fossil fuel industries.
The ABC show shows that much of the opposition is ill-informed at best and sometimes outright lies that have assumed a life of their own by frequent repetition by people that have no idea.
