D225G is a receptor binding domain which allows the virus to attach to the cell.
Debate going on at the moment on a number of sites about the significance of D225G. The conclusion (so far) is that because D225G was also found in Mexico and US in April (4 samples) and in seasonal flu in May (1 sample), is that it has been around for some time. The change does appear to offer a selective advantage in reproducing.
I will try and find out more. Unfortunately all of my medical books are in Australia and my interest was in bacterial tropical diseases.
