Cities are hard to take therefore you dont need to deploy all of your best troops to hold them and given there are probably 100k+ volunteers willing to defend Kiev makes the regulars job easier. These volunteers are now just as battle hardened as the Russians invading so I am wondering if we might see a Ukrainian counter attack. Early days yet but I can imagine the conversations going in a few Russian households I know of.
