So what is the moral of the story ?
Keep some nukes in reserve maybe ?
Only sell off all Nukes if dead certain of becoming a NATO member ?
In the last 15 years declare one self neutral and have no aspiration of joining NATO so Putin may be less upset ?
Break off the Eastern part of Ukraine and make all the sub states independent (seems to have worked for Chechnya )

Form memory the ICBMs Ukraine had were designed exactly as such for Intercontinental flight so would not be useful against a short distance to Moscow , so maybe their deterrence capability was questionable anyway
