A very long, but good read.

In short, what happens when nobody wants to sell their gold for paper money. They just say 'oh, no thanks, I will just keep my real money (gold)'. Then the paper money printers run out the back and say 'ok, here is some more money with zeros on the back'. And the gold seller again declines to sell for the paper.
